US Stock Markets End Week with Gains Despite Weekly Losses

US stock indexes closed higher on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining 517.80 points, or 0.98%, to finish at 53,277.01. The S&P 500 rose by 33.21 points, or 0.43%, closing at 7,674.37, while the Nasdaq Composite increased by 113.29 points, or 0.44%, to end at 26,180.46. Despite this positive close, all three major indexes recorded losses for the week, with the S&P 500 down 1.43%, the Nasdaq falling 2.05%, and the Dow slipping 0.85%.

The declines were attributed to rising long-dated Treasury yields, which reached levels not seen since 2007, alongside increasing oil prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The 30-year US Treasury yield peaked at 5.327% around August 18, contributing to investor anxiety. Brent crude oil prices rose 6.39% for the week, while US crude increased by 5.66%, reflecting concerns over the US-Iran relationship and its potential impact on global oil supply.

A stronger-than-expected US business activity report on Friday provided a boost to the markets, particularly in the services sector, which experienced its strongest growth in nearly two years. However, the divergence in weekly performance between the Nasdaq and the Dow highlighted the sensitivity of growth and tech stocks to rising interest rates, as their valuations are heavily influenced by future earnings. Investors are closely monitoring economic data and corporate earnings as they prepare for the upcoming Jackson Hole symposium, where discussions on inflation and interest rates are anticipated.
