XRP Broke $1 Again, and Each Bounce Has Been Weaker Than…

XRP fell below $1 on August 11 and set a 2026 low of $0.9874 on August 14, its weakest level since November 2024, before testing the line again on August 16. The token sits roughly 72.5% below its July 2025 record of $3.65.What makes this breakdown different from earlier dips is the pattern behind it: XRP has poked below that line several times in August, and every recovery has printed a lower high than the one before it.

A Support Level That Keeps Bending

XRP entered August trading near $1.07 and has tested the $1 level at least twice in the month, recovering each time but on progressively weaker volume and shallower bounces. The first recovery in early August reclaimed $1.07. The second attempt barely held $1.05 before rolling over. The third, on August 16, saw a CoinGecko snapshot near $0.9993 before a partial climb above $1, and the exact low depends on the data source; Benzinga reported $0.995A separate Blockonomi snapshot placed XRP at $0.9992, or 72.6% below its record. The first sustained break below $1 occurred on August 11, not August 16, marking the first such move since the $0.89 close on November 15, 2024.Reported trading volume dropped 57% alongside the decline, suggesting the selling was not panic liquidation but a slow leak of conviction. The broader market is compounding the pressure, and Bitcoin has spent most of August trapped between $62,500 and $64,500, repeatedly failing to reclaim $65,000. BTC traded near $63,000 on August 16, with a record negative streak on the Coinbase Premium Index pointing to weak U.S. buying interest. When Bitcoin stalls, the altcoin bid tends to evaporate, and XRP has no internal momentum to offset that drag.

The Institutional Bid That Stopped Showing Up

The bull case for XRP in 2026 rested on two pillars: spot ETF inflows and the CLARITY Act. Both have stalled. XRP ETFs attracted just $3.27 million in the first half of August, down from $27 million in July and $131 million at their May peak, according to BenzingaInflows for the week ending August 8 came to $1.01 million, a 93% collapse from the prior week. Cumulative inflows across all XRP ETFs stand at roughly $1.51 billion, but net assets stood at approximately $942 million as of mid-August, as price erosion offset accumulation.Veteran trader Peter Brandt dismissed the token on August 16. "Who the heck even cares about XRP," Brandt wrote on X, adding that he would convert a hypothetical 500,000 XRP holding into Bitcoin immediately. His remarks describe a preference, not a fresh price target, but they landed while the token was testing its weakest level in 21 months. Brandt had briefly adopted a constructive view on XRP in November 2024, then warned by March 2025 that a bearish head-and-shoulders pattern could pull the token toward $1.07.

A Floor Held on Fading Demand Usually Breaks

The pattern forming around $1 resembles a textbook demand exhaustion setup. Support that survives repeated tests is often read as strong, but only when each bounce matches or exceeds the prior one in velocity and volume. When every recovery is shallower, the bid underneath is thinning. CryptoQuant tracked the taker buy/sell ratio near 0.8, with a seven-day average at 0.9, according to Blockonomi. That ratio indicates persistent seller dominance in derivatives markets.Roughly 36.8 billion XRP, about 60% of the circulating supply, sits at a loss at an average cost basis near $1.48, according to 247 Wall St. That creates a substantial overhead supply zone that rallies may need to absorb before gaining traction. The CLARITY Act, which would open the path for XRP to be treated as a digital commodity, stalled in the Senate before the August recess. Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed a cloture motion on August 8, and the procedural vote is scheduled for September 15. Cloture requires 60 votes, meaning at least seven Democrats must join 53 Republicans. Galaxy Research estimates the bill has roughly a 10% chance of becoming law in 2026. Without that catalyst or a reversal in ETF demand, XRP's structural bid has no fresh source of capital to draw on. The September 15 cloture vote and whether monthly ETF inflows break above $50 million are the next data points that will determine if $1 holds or gives way.
