Argentina's Crypto Dollar Premium Drops to 4% Following Capital Control Reforms

Argentina has seen a significant reduction in the premium on stablecoins, which has fallen to approximately 4% after the government lifted capital controls. Previously, during the peak of these restrictions, premiums had exceeded 100%, forcing Argentines to pay inflated prices for digital dollars like USDT and USDC on local exchanges. This shift is attributed to reforms initiated by President Javier Milei's administration, which dismantled key components of the capital control system in April 2025.

The reforms included the removal of a $200 monthly cap on dollar purchases and the elimination of a 30% withholding tax on foreign currency transactions. These changes were part of an International Monetary Fund-supported program that introduced a managed floating exchange rate, allowing the peso to fluctuate within a set band. Since the lifting of these controls, Argentines have purchased over $26 billion in US dollars through official channels, with net purchases around $22.7 billion after accounting for sales back into pesos.

Despite the narrowing premium, stablecoins continue to play a significant role in Argentina's crypto market, accounting for 94% of the country's peso crypto trading volume. Although stablecoin trading activity has stabilized at about one-fifth of its levels during the height of capital controls, the ongoing usage indicates a shift from speculative trading to a more utility-driven approach. This trend is seen as a positive sign for stablecoin issuers, suggesting that their products maintain user engagement even after the initial crisis conditions have eased.
