BlackRock ETF Clients Withdraw $110 Million from Ethereum Amid Broader Crypto Fund Outflows

On September 16, BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) experienced a significant redemption of $110.03 million, marking the largest single-fund outflow in the U.S. spot Ethereum ETF market for the day. This withdrawal was part of a larger trend, as total net outflows across U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs reached $224 million. The sell-off was largely attributed to investor reactions following the Federal Reserve's first interest rate hike in three years, prompting institutional investors to reassess their positions in the cryptocurrency market.

In addition to BlackRock, other asset managers also faced substantial outflows. Fidelity's Ethereum ETF (FETH) saw a reduction of $55.58 million, while BlackRock's staking-enabled Ethereum product (ETHB) lost $19.76 million. The selling pressure was not limited to Ethereum; U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced nearly $296 million in net outflows, with BlackRock's Bitcoin fund (IBIT) accounting for $144.1 million of that total. Despite these outflows, Ethereum's spot price increased by 1.54% on the same day, indicating a complex market dynamic.

Despite the recent outflows, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs have seen cumulative net inflows of approximately $13.14 billion since their launch in mid-2024. This figure reflects the total capital that has entered these products, suggesting that for every dollar withdrawn on September 16, about $59 had previously been invested and remained in the market. BlackRock's ETHA has been a dominant player in the U.S. Ethereum ETF landscape, and its substantial size means that its inflows and outflows can significantly influence the sector as a whole. The recent outflows appear to be driven more by macroeconomic factors rather than specific concerns about the assets themselves, as evidenced by the overall market's ability to absorb selling pressure.
