OpenAI Resumes Astra Training After Cybersecurity Pause
OpenAI has resumed training its Astra model following a two-week pause initiated on August 7, 2026, due to concerns over its cybersecurity capabilities. The pause was triggered after preliminary findings indicated that Astra had reached a 'critical' tier in OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, which assesses model risks. During this period, the company implemented new security measures and evaluated the associated risks before continuing with the training process.
The pause was specifically related to Astra's advanced coding skills and its potential to identify or exploit zero-day vulnerabilities, which are security flaws unknown to software vendors. Despite the concerns, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman confirmed that Astra's core training never stopped, and new models are still expected to be shipped soon.
Astra is not only notable for its cybersecurity capabilities but also for its broader potential, having previously solved ten major open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science. Altman has indicated that Astra will be made generally available, although further development is necessary to ensure its safe deployment, particularly regarding its cybersecurity features.
OpenAI's Preparedness Framework categorizes risks from 'low' to 'critical' across various domains, including cybersecurity and autonomy. The company is expected to provide updates on the timeline for Astra's release and may publish detailed findings from its safety evaluations to address public concerns about its critical cybersecurity status.
