MetaMask has launched protection against “romance” and investment scams

      • MetaMask added a feature that detects signs of “romance” and investment scams before funds are sent.
      • The wallet shows users short questions and warnings instead of automatically blocking the transaction.
      • The new feature is available in MetaMask Mobile v8.11+ and Extension v13.48+ across all EVM networks.

MetaMask crypto wallet launched a new protection mechanism against “romance” and investment scams. It analyzes potential risks right before funds are sent and may ask the user additional questions if a transaction looks suspicious.

According to MetaMask, the system looks for signs of “romance” and investment scams at the moment a user is preparing to send funds. In particular, the wallet uses checks from its security partner Blockaid. The service can flag recipient addresses that have previously been identified as malicious.

If the system detects a potential risk, MetaMask shows the user a few short questions. These include whether they have met the recipient in real life, whether anyone has promised guaranteed returns, and whether they are being rushed into sending funds.

In this way, the feature is meant to help the user notice the telltale signs of a scam scheme right before the transaction.

      Why MetaMask Added This Feature

“Romance” and investment scams differ from many other attacks in that they do not necessarily involve a technical hack, MetaMask noted. Attackers can build trust with a victim for weeks or months, and then persuade them to transfer funds.

MetaMask noted that in 2025, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) linked $7.2 billion in losses in the US to crypto investment fraud.

Typical security tools that look for malicious code or dangerous smart contracts may not catch such a transaction, the article says, because the operation itself may technically contain no malicious components.

MetaMask decided not to fully block suspicious transfers, but to add an extra step before confirmation. The company compares it to a “speed bump” that forces the user to pause and assess the situation.

According to the developers, this should not only help users avoid a specific transfer, but also teach them to better recognize similar schemes in the future.

The new feature is already available in MetaMask Mobile version 8.11 and above, and in the Extension version 13.48 and above, across all EVM-based networks.

As a reminder, MetaMask previously introduced a crypto wallet for AI agents.
