Turkey Engages in Diplomacy to Reopen Strait of Hormuz and Support US-Iran Ceasefire

Turkey is actively involved in diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and maintain a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to address these critical issues, which are intertwined with the ongoing conflict that has severely restricted commercial navigation through this vital waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global oil exports, accounting for approximately 20% of the world's crude oil shipments. Since the onset of hostilities, the International Energy Agency has reported unprecedented supply disruptions, with Brent crude prices soaring above $100 per barrel during periods of heightened market stress. The current crisis began with US-Israeli military strikes on Iran in February 2026, leading to a series of failed ceasefire attempts.

Fidan has emphasized the need for a diplomatic agreement between Washington and Tehran before any technical measures to restore access to the Strait can be implemented. He has expressed cautious optimism about the talks, which are being facilitated by intermediaries such as Pakistan and Oman. Reports indicate that Iran and Oman are exploring temporary routing coordinates for oil shipments, suggesting some progress in operational planning despite ongoing restrictions on commercial traffic.

The involvement of Oman, known for its discreet role in US-Iran communications, adds a layer of seriousness to the negotiations. However, the history of collapsed ceasefire agreements raises questions about the durability of any potential resolution, as the economic impact of the ongoing disruptions continues to escalate.
