BitBox Addresses Critical Firmware Vulnerabilities in Bitcoin Wallets

BitBox, a Swiss hardware wallet manufacturer, has announced the resolution of two significant firmware vulnerabilities affecting its BitBox02 and BitBox02 Nova devices. These flaws were identified through AI-assisted internal security audits, which successfully detected issues related to memory corruption and payment-routing bugs before any funds were compromised. The company has released a firmware update, version 9.26.5, urging all users to install it immediately to ensure their devices are secure.

The first vulnerability pertains to unconfigured 'Multi' edition devices, where an attacker could exploit memory corruption to execute arbitrary code or install unauthorized firmware. The second issue involved the Silent Payments feature, which could inadvertently lock user funds at incorrect addresses. However, this flaw posed a risk of accidental loss rather than direct theft, as it required cooperation from an attacker to exploit.

BitBox has also revisited a previously patched bootloader vulnerability, determining that it was more severe than initially assessed. The company operates under an open-source model and maintains a bug bounty program, allowing external researchers to verify the firmware code independently. Users are advised to update their devices only through official channels to avoid phishing attacks, which are common during firmware update announcements.
