Apple Launches First 2-Nanometer M6 Chip, Boosting Taiwan's Supply Chain

Apple has officially introduced its first 2-nanometer M6 chip, which features a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and dual 16-core neural network engines. The chip, which boasts a unified memory bandwidth of up to 170GB per second, is initially available in the new Mac mini. This M6 chip is manufactured by TSMC and is notable for being the world's first consumer-grade chip to utilize gate-all-around (GAA) nanosheet transistors.

The supply chain is now focusing on the advanced packaging architecture for future high-end M series chips. Building on the Fusion Architecture from the previous M5 series, Apple is shifting from a single large die to a modular design. Upcoming models such as the M6 Pro, Max, and Ultra are anticipated to require enhanced packaging solutions, including SoIC-MH and WMCM, which will improve interconnect density and integrate various components more efficiently.

TSMC is preparing for significant expansion to meet the demand for these advanced packaging technologies. The Zhunan AP6 facility will serve as the primary mass production base for SoIC, while the Longtan AP3 site is being upgraded for WMCM capabilities. By the end of 2026, analysts predict that WMCM's monthly production capacity could reach approximately 60,000 units, with projections exceeding 120,000 units in 2027. This growth is expected to benefit various equipment and material manufacturers in the region.
