Nike Removed from S&P 100 Following Significant Stock Decline

Nike has been removed from the S&P 100 index, a decision announced by S&P Dow Jones Indices on September 4, with the change set to take effect before the market opens on September 21, 2026. This removal comes after a dramatic decline in Nike's stock price, which has fallen over 75% from its peak in 2021, resulting in a loss of approximately $230 billion in market capitalization. Currently, the stock trades at levels not seen in 12 years, around $38 to $40.

The decline in Nike's stock has been attributed to several factors, including stagnant revenue growth, shrinking gross margins, and ongoing challenges in the Greater China market. Nike is not alone in this rebalance; other companies such as Honeywell Aerospace, Simon Property Group, and Colgate-Palmolive are also exiting the S&P 100, making way for tech firms like Dell Technologies, Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks, and Sandisk.

While Nike will remain part of the broader S&P 500 index, its removal from the S&P 100 could lead to increased selling pressure on its shares as institutional investors and funds adjust their portfolios. The shift in the index composition reflects a broader market trend, moving away from consumer brands towards companies focused on digital infrastructure and technology. Nike's future in the S&P 100 will depend on its ability to address its current financial challenges and regain investor confidence.
