Qatar Faces Economic Challenges Amid US-Iran Conflict

Qatar's economy is experiencing significant strain due to recent Iranian strikes on the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. These events have resulted in a 17% reduction in LNG export capacity, leading to an estimated annual revenue loss of around $20 billion. The country's first major bond issuance in years, raising approximately $3 billion, highlights the severity of the situation as Qatar seeks to manage its fiscal challenges.

In the first quarter of 2026, Qatar reported a budget deficit of QR10.3 billion, or $2.83 billion, a staggering increase compared to the same period the previous year. Revenue fell by 23.5%, while operating expenditures saw only a slight reduction of 3.7%. The drop in LNG exports, which fell by roughly 33% year-over-year, has rattled global energy markets, as Qatar has been a key supplier of LNG.

Forecasts for Qatar's GDP in 2026 vary widely, with S&P projecting a 5% contraction and Capital Economics suggesting a potential decline of 14%. The uncertainty stems from geopolitical factors, particularly the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. Repairs to the Ras Laffan complex are expected to take three to five years, indicating that Qatar's reduced export capacity may persist well into the future, affecting revenue projections for the coming decade.

As of August 2026, Qatar has resumed partial LNG exports, signaling some stabilization in operations. However, the broader normalization of the market is dependent on diplomatic progress in the region. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and LNG supply, remains precarious, and the implications of Iran's actions continue to reverberate throughout the energy markets and beyond.
