Router Protocol to Cease Operations and Burn 303 Million ROUTE Tokens

Router Protocol, a cross-chain interoperability project, has announced it will permanently shut down by September 30, 2026, after failing to find a buyer or viable path forward despite extensive commercialization efforts. The project will burn 303,333,198 ROUTE tokens from its treasury, which represents over 30% of its total maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. Following the announcement, the price of ROUTE dropped approximately 50%, reaching an all-time low of around $0.00004.

Over the past year, Router Protocol's team attempted to license its technology, commercialize the platform, and find a buyer, but these efforts were unsuccessful. Contributing factors included low liquidity in the Web3 space, high operational costs, and insufficient revenue from bridging services to cover expenses. The project had been using its historical bridging fees for buyback-and-burn programs, leaving no financial reserves to draw upon when conditions worsened. Additionally, two security exploits in 2025 raised concerns about the project's stability, although they were not cited as primary reasons for the shutdown.

The closure of Router Protocol highlights the challenges facing blockchain bridging projects, particularly the imbalance between low fees and high operational costs. Despite its backing from investors like Coinbase Ventures and the launch of its own Router Chain L1 in 2024, the project struggled to maintain viability in a competitive landscape increasingly focused on AI-related initiatives. While Router Protocol's exit raises questions about the future of cross-chain interoperability, other competitors such as LayerZero and Axelar continue to operate, indicating that the demand for cross-chain asset movement remains strong.
