South Korea to Enhance Regulation of High-Yield ELS Starting September

South Korea's financial regulatory authorities are set to implement stricter regulations on equity-linked securities (ELS) beginning in September. Brokerages will be mandated to issue warnings to investors when these products approach the principal loss trigger line, known as the Knock-in level. Additionally, firms will need to reassess the design and sales of these products in response to heightened market risks.

Recent fluctuations in the South Korean stock market have not deterred retail investors from pursuing high-risk investments. Following regulatory measures on leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs), there has been a notable shift towards ELS, which offer attractive coupon rates. In July, the sales volume of ELS reached 35 trillion won, marking the highest level in over three years, driven primarily by products linked to major companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
