Taiwan's Aerospace and Optical Industries Disrupted by Germanium Export Delays from China

Taiwan's aerospace and optical manufacturing sectors are experiencing significant disruptions due to delays in germanium exports from China. Customs hold-ups have created production bottlenecks, impacting the supply chain for critical technologies that rely on this minor metal. Industry insiders indicate that these delays are a result of Beijing's strategic use of its control over essential mineral supply chains, further straining the already tense relationship between Taiwan and China.

The situation escalated after China implemented stricter export licensing requirements for germanium in August 2023, which were followed by additional restrictions targeting American buyers in late 2024. Currently, shipments to Taiwan are being held up at customs, suggesting a politically motivated strategy rather than a regulatory issue. This tactic represents a subtle yet impactful escalation in China's approach to its territorial claims over Taiwan.

Germanium is crucial for various technologies, including infrared optics, fiber-optic cables, and specialized semiconductors used in military and satellite communications. Despite its minor metal status, with global production in the hundreds of metric tons, China's dominance in the market gives it significant leverage over nations reliant on consistent access to germanium. Taiwan's aerospace industry, which supports global defense and commercial aviation programs, along with its optical manufacturing capabilities, is particularly vulnerable to these supply chain disruptions.
