US Military Implements Oil Shipping Corridor in Strait of Hormuz Amid Iranian Threats

The US military has established a protected shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz, known as Project Freedom, in response to ongoing threats from Iran. This initiative, which began in early May 2026, has facilitated the movement of approximately 500 million barrels of crude oil, although current daily flows remain significantly below pre-crisis levels.

As of July 2026, the corridor is operating at about 5 million barrels per day, a fraction of the strait's historical capacity of 15 to 20 million barrels daily. The operation involves aerial and drone surveillance coordinated by CENTCOM, with commercial vessels receiving specific routing guidance to navigate safely through the southern corridor near Oman, away from Iranian territorial waters.

Despite the US military's presence, Iranian attacks on vessels using this route have persisted, complicating the shipping environment. The ongoing threats have led to increased insurance costs and concerns over vessel safety, contributing to the reduced volume of oil transported through the strait. The current situation highlights the challenges facing global oil supply chains, as the strait operates at a fraction of its potential capacity.
