Boeing Engineers Union Rejects Contract and Authorizes Strikes

Members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) have overwhelmingly rejected Boeing's proposed four-year contract offers, with nearly 90% of the workforce authorizing a strike. The vote took place on August 21, with the professional unit, comprising approximately 13,000 engineers, rejecting the deal by a margin of 64.25%. The technical unit, representing around 4,000 workers, showed even stronger disapproval, with a rejection rate of 71.87%.

The proposed contracts included wage increases of 29.4% to 31.9% over four years; however, the inflation-linked raises were capped at 3%, which was a significant point of contention. SPEEA's bargaining unit councils had recommended rejecting the offers, arguing that the proposed wage growth did not keep pace with the rising cost of living. Negotiations began on July 1, and a tentative agreement was reached by late July, but the rank-and-file's rejection was unexpected after initial support from SPEEA's negotiating team.

The current contracts are set to expire on October 6, allowing time for both parties to negotiate further. This marks the first full contract negotiation between SPEEA and Boeing in nearly 14 years. The last strike by SPEEA occurred in 2000 and lasted for 40 days. A potential strike could significantly impact Boeing's engineering operations, particularly as the company is already facing delays in the certification of the 737 MAX 10 and the 777-9. A work stoppage would further hinder these timelines, adding to Boeing's ongoing labor challenges.
