Kalshi and Polymarket Experience 14% Drop in Monthly Trading Volume in August

Combined trading volume on prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket fell by 14.5% in August, reaching $45.33 billion. This decline follows a record-setting July, where the platforms recorded $50.59 billion in volume, largely driven by the FIFA World Cup, which took place from June 11 to July 19.

The World Cup significantly boosted sports betting contracts, which have accounted for over 88% of recent activity on Kalshi. In July, Kalshi alone contributed $37.7 billion, approximately 74.5% of the total volume across both platforms. However, as the World Cup concluded, the platforms saw a noticeable decrease in trading activity, particularly on Polymarket's offshore platform.

Despite the overall downturn, Kalshi achieved a milestone by surpassing $10 billion in weekly contract volume for the first time, reaching $10.17 billion for the week ending August 30. The NFL preseason markets generated $167.8 million in activity across both platforms during the week ending August 16, with Kalshi accounting for about 79% of that volume. Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated exchange in the US, focusing heavily on sports, while Polymarket has drawn interest in macro and esports markets.
