US AI Labs Reduce Inference Costs by Nearly 25% Amid Competitive Pressure

The average cost of AI inference from leading US laboratories has decreased by nearly 25% between mid-July and mid-August, as reported by Silicon Data. This significant price drop is attributed to competitive pressures from Chinese companies, particularly DeepSeek and Moonshot, which are offering comparable AI models at lower prices.

OpenAI initiated the price cuts on July 30, reducing the cost of its mid-range GPT-5.6 model tiers significantly. The GPT-5.6 Luna model saw an 80% price reduction, while the GPT-5.6 Terra experienced a 20% decrease. OpenAI's flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol, maintained its price but improved performance options were introduced. Similarly, Anthropic launched its Claude Opus 5 model at half the price of its predecessor, Fable 5.

This trend of decreasing costs is expected to benefit enterprises looking to adopt AI technologies, as lower prices can facilitate broader experimentation and integration into various workflows.
