Ledger Addresses Vulnerability in Ethereum App

Ledger has released a patch for a vulnerability in its Ethereum hardware wallet app that could have allowed malicious decentralized applications to replace legitimate transactions with harmful ones during the signing process. The issue, identified as a race condition bug, was addressed in version 1.22.2 of the Ethereum app on August 12, but the company did not publicly announce the fix until a security researcher brought attention to it.

The vulnerability involved an Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) command race condition, which could trick the signing process by allowing a malicious command to replace the original transaction data. This could have led users to unknowingly authorize unlimited token approvals to an attacker-controlled address while believing they were approving a legitimate transaction. Ledger's internal security team, known as Donjon, discovered the flaw and utilized AI-assisted tools to resolve it before any external reports were made.

The lack of public communication regarding the patch changed when a researcher known as TestMachine disclosed the vulnerability between August 21 and 23, highlighting the potential risks associated with the race condition. Ledger's Chief Technology Officer, Charles Guillemet, responded to the disclosure by stating that users running the latest version of the app were already protected and criticized the public announcement as fear-mongering. No incidents of lost funds due to this vulnerability have been reported, and users are advised to update their Ethereum app to the latest version.
